RC Perspective
By Robert Bennett

On Sat 11/10/07, fourteen Lasers and three Albacores competed in the PRSA Fall Finale regatta.  At the noon skipper's meeting, votes were held that resulted in racing by the power plant,  and to replace the 720 penalty turn with a 360 turn.  After encountering wind shifting from the NNE toward NNW which required adjusting the windward mark, the RC started the first triangle windward leeward (TWL) race at 12:48pm for the Lasers in about 5 knots of constant breeze (but less breeze closer inland at the jib mark).  Pryor took the first bullet with Erich Hesse and Bob Wilbur close behind.  Meanwhile the first Albacore race started around 1:10p, also TWL, in which Ernest took and held the lead.

The second Laser race was a simple windward leeward once around and started at 1:21p, and Erich took the first with a substantial lead. Albacores started around 1:40p for their second race; same finishes as the first race occurred.

The breeze began building to about 7 knots for the third race.  A TWL began around 1:35p in which the RC noticed two Lasers sailing upwind capsized during puffs--these puffs/shifts came from NW.  Two Albacores began their third race, a match race, around 2:10pm between Ernest and Mike.  Erich and Ernest once again took the firsts.  Stephen Yelland, while trying to catch a drink from the RC after the 3rd race, ended up in the drink much to the RC's amusement.

After the third race, the RC swung the starting line and leeward mark east /into the river to account for the wind clocking toward the west.  The Mark boat provided some help on the water, jury rigging to one Laser's tiller/rudder. The fourth laser race was started around 2:05pm as a windward leeward twice around for both fleets and Erich again won the laser race with Mike finishing strong in the last Albacore race.

The breeze gradually increased all day maxing out at around 11 knots.  The fifth Laser race began at 2:30p and was another TWL and the competitive start resulted in 2 lasers over early at the pin end.  The RC noted at least one Laser capsize while sailing downwind and by the lee.  Stephen managed to fend off Erich for the bullet.  For the sixth, last, and windiest race, a TWL was sailed that began at 3p and Erich regained his lead and took the first.

Since 6 races were sailed, the laser fleet had one throwout.  After derigging, chili, beer, apple cider and rum, chips, cookies, and homemade cornbread were enjoyed by all.  Congratulations to Erich Hesse for winning the laser fleet with a total of 6 points, to Stephen Yelland for second place with 11 points, and to David Teale with 24 points.  Congratulations to Ernest for winning the albacore fleet with 5 points, to Mike for second place with 7 points, and to Kevin for third place with 13 points.

Special thanks to Martin Howell of the Interlake fleet, Becky Mach of the Lightning fleet, and Tiffany Bludau of the V15 fleet for making RC duties fun and easy.  See everyone next Sunday for laser frostbiting!
