RESULTS: President's Cup and Leukemia Class 1.0 On September 10 & 11, 2005 the Potomac River Sailing Association will organize the President’s Cup and Leukemia Cup Regattas on the Potomac River from the Washington Sailing Marina, near Washington, D.C. 2.0 These races will be governed by the rules as defined in the The Racing Rules of Sailing. 3.0 All class-legal boats in one-design classes 20’ or under are invited to participate. Classes of 5 or more boats will be started separately. Classes of fewer than 5 boats may be combined with another class. 4.0 Registration will be open on Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Washington Sailing Marina. 4.1 This is the 71st President’s Cup Regatta held on the Potomac River. All competitors must register for the President’s Cup to race. Competitors may also choose to register for and race in the Leukemia Cup, which will be scored as a separate Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) event. The Leukemia Cup is an opportunity for the area’s racing sailors to make a vital, charitable contribution to the work of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society*. 4.2 President’s Cup Registration: All competitors must register for the President’s Cup by completing an entry form and paying the following fees: Lower course boats All (Laser, Penguin, El Toro, Sunfish, etc.) $20 Upper course boats 2-person boat (Albacore, Buccaneer, etc.) $35 3-person boat (Lightning) $50 These fees include dinner & a party for the skipper and his or her crew on Saturday night. Note that the donors of Saturday’s dinner—Guest Services at the Washington Sailing Marina—have directed that the dinner portion of the registration fee go to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
4.3 Leukemia Cup Registration: Those competitors wishing to (1) raise contributions and make a donation to support the research mission of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, (2) contend for the Leukemia Cup prizes, and (3) participate in this separate CBYRA event must register separately for the Leukemia Cup. Leukemia Cup registration requires a donation of at least $100 to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Competitors are encouraged to raise this amount and more by making and seeking donations. 4.4 Leukemia Class entrants receive t-shirts,
additional dinner tickets, hats and a goody bag indexed to their level of
fundraising as incentives (see below). Because
all donations to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society are gratefully acknowledged
in writing, it is necessary to make those donations with a check that is
separate from the President’s Cup entry fee. $100 to $499 Boat

can send in. 5.0 Prizes: An award will be given to the top two finishers in each class using Saturday’s results among Leukemia Cup entrants ($100+ contributor/fundraisers). 5.1 Trophies for the President’s Cup will be awarded using Saturday’s results for classes on the lower course and Saturday and Sunday’s results for classes on the upper course. Awards will be given to each member of the winning crews. The depth of awards will be set out in the Sailing Instructions, and will be based on the expected number of participants in each class; 4 deep for classes with 11 or more expected boats, 3 deep for 8-10 boats, 2 deep for 5-7 boats, and 1 for 2-4 boats. 5.2 Sailors will also compete for the perpetual Normal C. Schaller Memorial Trophy. It is awarded to the skipper with the best record in fleets of 10 or more starters in at least half the races. 5.3 The National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will award prizes to the top two fundraising one-design boats and the top 10 individual fundraisers from both the one-design and the separate PHRF regatta. The top overall fundraising boat from both the one-design and PHRF Leukemia Class entrants will have their name added to the perpetual trophy displayed at the Washington Sailing Marina. Top 10 Individual Fundraisers: The top individual fundraiser will win a 35-percent-off certificate for a purchase of a sail from North Sails and the opportunity to have the first pick of a selection of additional prizes. Other prizes to top individual fundraisers include: · Five-day/night Sunsail Charter* · $250 West Marine Gift Certificate · Wooden Ken Gardiner Boat Model All 10 Top Individual Fundraisers receive a Leukemia Cup Burgee and a Mount Gay Hat. Top Two One-Design Boats will receive various great prizes! Note:
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society would be grateful if all monies to be
counted toward a fundraising total were turned in before Saturday, Sept.
10th. There will be a pre-race
picnic at the Washington Sailing Marina, hosted by Outback Steakhouse, Friday,
Sept. 9th, to register and turn in contributions. 5.4 National Prizes for
Individual Fundraisers
Gary Jobson Fantasy Sail* All Leukemia Cup Regatta participants who raise a minimum of $8,500 will win a weekend trip including accommodations and travel to the Fantasy Sail weekend. The Fantasy Sail (with Gary Jobson) is scheduled for December 2-5, 2005 at Antigua’s posh Sunsail Club Colonna. Package includes round trip airfare for one person, three nights accommodation for two people (in one room), meals for two, unlimited use of watersports equipment at the club and participation in the Fantasy Sail for two. West Marine All Leukemia Cup Regatta participants who raise a minimum of $500 will be eligible for 1 chance in a national drawing for a West Marine Shopping Spree ($2,500 value). Earn additional chances for each $500 raised (e.g. $1,000 raised = 2 chances; $1,500 raised = 3 chances, etc.) The drawing will take place in December 2005 during the Gary Jobson Fantasy Sail Weekend. Sailing World Magazine The top overall national fundraiser will receive an embroidered Sailing World foul weather gear sailing jacket. Jacket will be awarded in December of 2005. Sunday1030 First warning signal (upper course) 1400 No race is to be started after this time (upper course) Immediately Following President’ Cup Awards ceremony as soon as boats return to shore 7.0 Location: All boats launch from the Washington Sailing Marina just off of the George Washington Parkway about 1.5 miles south of Reagan National Airport and a similar distance north of Old Town Alexandria. classes will sail off of Haines Point with the Capitol and monuments as a
backdrop (upper course). Penguins, El Toros, Lasers, and Bytes will sail on the
lower course off of the powerplant and only a short distance from the docks
(lower course). |
