Refueling Policy

Someone on the boat committee will try to keep the boats fueled.  However, it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that there is enough fuel in the boat before going out.

The 19 foot Skiff has an internal 18 gallon tanks under its center console.  At the beginning of the day make sure you have gas above the line marked on the tank.  If not, get the 5-gallon plastic gas can from the locker and go to Alexandria and get mid-grade (89 octane) gas.  Add the fuel using the long funnel stored under the console.

We don't use the internal tank on the 16 foot Skiff.  Instead we use the orange portable tank under the rear deck.  At the beginning of the day make sure you have a half tank or better.  If not, take that orange portable tank and go to Alexandria and get premium-grade (93 octane) gas.  Don't fill it too high and close the vent while travelling so the gas doesn't slosh into your car.

The Bayliner’s gas gauge is not reliable. Someone on the boat committee has made sure there is enough gas in the boat. However, if you want insurance, bring a 5 gallon plastic gas can filled with regular-grade (86 octane) gas. You can add it if the boat committee has fallen down on the job. The filler is on the port side of the transom. The tool for opening it is in the ice box. Don’t drop the cover or the tool into the water!

Gas can also be found up at the James Creek Marina, which is at the mouth of the Anacostia River on the left hand (north) side.   They should always be open at the end of the day.  Their phone number is 202 554-8844.  Their summer hours are 8:00 to 6:45 Monday-Saturday and 9:00 to 6:45 on Sunday.  Note that the Bayliner's tank holds 50+ gallons.

Keep receipts and drop them in the mail to Yates Dowell, PRSA Treasurer, 1132 Cameron Drive, Alexandria, VA 22308-1234.  He will reimburse you.
