VHF Radios

Communication between the PRO on and the two support boats is key not just for efficiency of running races but also for safety, because the people on one boat may not notice that there is a sailor in trouble.

Antenna: After uncovering the boats, turn the antenna to the vertical position and tighten the handle.

Volume:  Using the volume control knob, turn on the radio and set the volume level on the radio to its maximum.  These radios are not very loud and you need the volume to hear over the engine and airplanes.

Channel: Set the channel on 68.  This is for recreational use.

Radio Check:  Before getting too far from the marina, do a radio check between each of the three boats. A radio check conversation might go like:

PRSA race committee, this is the Bayliner, radio check
Bayliner, this is the 16, you are loud and clear
Bayliner, this is the 19, you are loud and clear
16, 16, this is the 19, radio check
19, this is the 16, you are loud and clear

Switching channels: If you find that this channel is being used, you could try 69.  This one is also for recreational use.  Typical conversation to change channels:

PRSA race committee, let's switch to channel 69.
This is the 19, switching to channel 69  (switch to 69).
This is the 16, switching to channel 69  (switch to 69).
After hearing both boats respond, the Bayliner switches to 69.
This is the 19 standing by on channel 69
This is the 16 standing by on channel 69
