Winners Write up, Frostbite Series #6 - 01/07/2007
Dave Teale

I tried to keep clear air so that I could concentrate on boat speed. For example, I started mid line or near the pin when the boat end may have been slightly favored. With the current running out, there was more time spent on starboard tack upwind. So, I tried to sail fast and wait patiently for a lane to open up before going over to port.

In the earlier races, the wind was light in spots. I resisted the urge to tack when hit with a velocity header and would let a boat in front go a different way. In the 2nd upwind of race1, I found myself approaching the starboard layline alone and gained when the wind came up from that side - making me first around that mark. Later in the day, I tried to tack on the shifts, but I can't say that this is a strength of mine. Upwind I wanted a light grip on the tiller and kept the draft of the sail at hand's length.

Downwind I was by the lee with the board higher than usual due to the current. Still, I was passed by some going downwind. It was shorter to head right of the leeward mark compensating for current, but boats threatened to move inside. When protecting the inside on one leg, I was passed by another boat to the outside.

Thanks to Mike and Bill for RC and getting us out on the river.
