Everyone who missed sailing this past Sunday missed another great day. The wind was at times a bit on the light side, but nothing like the week before. We got 7 races in. The RC did a great job getting the course set up and ready to go on time. A bunch of boats missed the first race, myself included. So the single biggest piece of performance enhancing advice I can give is to show up on time...
Being in the first row at the start and heading to the left were the key goals. The pin end of the start line was often favored, but if you were in the front row with some speed at the gun, even boat end starts worked well. Downwind, staying to the left (looking down the course) in order to get inside at the marks was, as usual, very important.
Next Sunday is the last week for scoring the first half of the series. So instead of yammering on about the nuances of mast bend or outhaul tension, I thought I'd do a little synopsis of who's in a position to qualify for the series, and put in a little plug for participation this coming Sunday.
In order to qualify, boats need to sail 60% of the races. We've done 29 races so far. One of the quirks with using a percentage qualification system like that is you won't know exactly how many races you'll need until after the series is over. Here's the likely range after next week:
If there's: 29 races total, you'll need, 18 races to qualify or....

So anyone with 23 or more races already: Jen, Jim, Nabeel, Keith, and Russ) are in great shape - any additional races they sail can be used as throw-outs. (By the way, DON'T trust my numbers - check the results for yourself on the website to be sure how may races you sailed...). So everyone in this group should show up to get more throw-outs, and to drink beer afterwards.
The next tier down is the people that have to show up on Sunday in order to either ensure that they stay above the 60% threshold, or to try to reach the 60% mark. That includes anyone who's already sailed between 22 and say, 14 races. (Although if you're on the lower end of that range, you should be hoping for lots and lots of races...) By my estimation, this includes Scott, Eric, Steve P, Khin, Shawn, David T, Lisbet, Dario, Jose, Frank, Lars, Dave D, and Matt. So everyone here should show up so that they can have a chance at qualifying, and to drink beer afterwards.
The third group may have in all likelihood, already sealed their fate for this half of the winter. But you should sail Sunday anyway, for the practice, for the opportunity to play mind games with the people in the second group, and (you guessed it...) to drink beer afterwards.
