2005 Hangover Regatta
Nabeel Alsalam

What a beautiful day it was! Record air temperatures in the high 60s. However, the water was still 38 degrees (so I did cringe when I saw people going out sailing with jeans on in boats without floatation). The winds were up and down and shifty, but there was enough to get planning at times.

Did you see the blurb we got in the Post Metro section? It was in the article on how people were enjoying the unseasonal weather. Stan Larmee was featured as the guy late to the races and aside from getting called the "Hangover Ball" it was better than most press coverage we get.

We had 18 or so boat out there at one time or another. Scott suffered a broken hiking strap and Tom a broken tiller extensions and had to go in early.

James sent his sub 100 lb son Alex out on the boat, but once the wind kicked up he took over the boat. He then proceeded to win the regatta in style. Max Williamson had only one bad race (a 10) which was tossed and took second by 10 points. Frank Gallagher and Lars Rathjen were tied but Frank won the die breaker with his second place finish versus Lars' third.

Thanks to Ben Forman for running the races and to David Thompson for being his main assistant. Thanks to James for bringing his whaler as a second boat and to Alex, Maryanne Gallagher, and Janice Rathjen for manning that boat, moving marks, etc. Unfortunately, Janice had a bad fall stepping off the boat. I hope she is OK. Thanks to Tom Ballantine for the excellent NOR, registering people, and handling most of the on-shore tasks.

The Potowmack Landing Restaurant was very inconsiderate in deciding not to open, so our usual post-race hangout was taken from us. Next year, we'll have to remember to have another place lined up.
