Third Place Write Up - 11/20/2011
Steve Yelland

So I understand that the third place finishers are to give their reviews of the days racing for this season.

It was one of those days on the river that seemed to have quite consistent wind not much in the way of shifts at least in the short time heading up to the windward mark after the starts. Each race seemed to have wind favored just a few degrees either side of the windward mark but the advantage seemed to be minimal and carried some risk getting caught up in bad air so I mostly started in the middle.

Typicaly after the first windward rounding I found my self sitting in a position just in front of the main body of the fleet but behind the front half dozen or so boats. I replicated the same down wind leg every race by going wide it made for a much easier windward rounding plenty of time to get the sheets out. I noticed how after the main body of the fleet started out on the down wind leg they blanketed some wind out of the group in front, being out wide I was not affected by this. Then I would start arching around onto a hotter sailing angle buy the lee, clear air and a good speed aiming to intercept the transom of the boats in front at 4 boat lengths from the Leeward mark, looking for some inside overlap. Only other thing I would say is when you are having a bad race don't ever think it's not as relevant as the one when you are up front because the average is what counts.

Fantastic to be out on the water again,

Steve Yelland
