Spring Frostbite Regatta - Saturday March 29

Khin Thein wins the Spring Frostbite Regatta!  Despite all the dire predictions, the wind started off light from the southwest along with some drizzle.  Then the clouds broke and we had a sunny afternoon with winds from the south.

March 23, 2003

The wind was from the northwest but was shifting west in fits which drove most of us bonkers. I guess it was 5 to 10 knots. As we sailed toward the windward mark the wind would die and, I think, shift left as a result of the shore effect. So working the left side of the course seemed to be the thing to do.I know that David Teale and I passed about 10 boats who were going up the right side when we worked the left on the second beat of race 2.

Also, the water was very high as all the rainwater was coming down from the West Virginia and points west of us. So when the tide turned around it was really ripping. A couple of times I set up for the pin end of the line but after dipping a latecomers who tacked into leeward of me I failed to make the pin.

Mike, however, managed all of these things extremely well and won the day in a landslide. David Teale had a very good day with a 1-2-3.

No wind --- until after we were towed in, of course.  A couple of the sailors (Dave Dalbec, Lars, and Mike) were smart enough to leave their boats rigged  and enjoyed a nice sail afterwards.

March 9, 2003
Gibson reports: Conditions similar to that of March 2.  I got to test my wetsuit a bit more.  Gusty conditions but fun sailing.  I think we put on a good show for the folks dining in the restaurant.

Thanks to Steve Yelland and Russ Roberts who ran some race committee.  David Tabor flipped on the 3rd race and broke his tiller; he went in after that.  James Jacobs arrived late to sail the last 3 races; he left everyone but Thacher in the dust.

March 2, 2003

After being forced off the water for two Sundays by snowstorms and very high winds, it was nice to get back out.  The winds built over the day and then died back a bit.  I’d estimated it was getting near 20 knots at the peak.  This turned the middle races into survival races and capsizes were common.

Mike is getting better and better.  Frank managed to edge him out in race 3 when Mike reached downwind while Frank headed straight for the mark.  Then Mike over stood the finish line as the strong current with the help of the wind was dragging the RC boat.

Is spring finally here?

It was blowing way too hard.

February 17, 2003

It is 15 degrees out.  The forecast says it won't reach 20.  The winds are 12 to 18 from the NE.   The snow is coming down heavily and is near a foot deep in my driveway and street.  I doubt the marina is ploughed out.  I think I'll stay home...

February 10, 2003

The winds were from the southwest but moved further west and got lighter over the day which made it a challenge for the race committee.  The boat end was usually heavily favored and sometimes we made it 80 percent of the way to the windward mark without tacking.  As we approached that mark, which was tucked in near shore, the breeze became shifty and light and it was (for me) to get around it efficiently.

January 19, 2003

It was very cold again.  In fact, the cove was mostly frozen over.  To get the committee boat out, we had to move forward very slowly while one of us broke the ice ahead with a pole.

The wind was west to northwest, so I set up the windward mark as far into the cove as possible and the leeward mark south of the docks as close to the mudflats as possible.  The first race was handicapped by the fact that a large ice sheet broke loose and the tide brought it down to the windward mark and prevented the racers from rounding it.  So they improvised and rounded the nearby day mark instead.  After a couple of races the tide swept the race course clean of most ice.

I set up an extremely long start-finish long line between the RC boat and the docks.  This made for some very interesting tactical decisions (and mistakes) at both the start and finish.  When the wind swung left, the pin end was favored and it paid to start on port down there.  Usually the boat end was the upwind end, but it was so far right that a left shift would kill the sailors who started there.  Plus, the shore was bending the wind, so that it also paid to finish at the pin end.  Strange.

Frank was often ahead during most of the race only to be frustrated by Mike at the finish.  Paul lent me his boat for the last two races and I used what I had learned from watching the racers to do a horizon job on them.  :-)

Afterwards we went into the restaurant and had some free munchies with our beer.  Thanks to Alex at the Potowmack Landing.

Dec. 1st was a real frostbite. The RC boat had to be de-iced and jump started. The river was the lowest we have seen due to the tide and wind, and pressure. The wind was on with gusts into the high 20's. A short course was set in the cove. 1 and 1/2 races were run until most competitors had enough of the conditions.   There were 6 boats. These were tough frostbite sailors and the results:
