About PRSA Opti Fleet
Adults already members of PRSA will attest to the club's helpful and knowledgeable
environment. Each of the participating PRSA fleets provide instruction
and organized racing for the experienced inexperienced alike. Weeknight
sailing, Sunday racing and social events are sprinkled throughout the
year to give people the ever important practice time and training that
keeps our racing informal, but competitive.
At the moment, we are working with the Washington Sailing Marina on
finding space for a fleet of boats while we figure out the logistics of
incorporating young sailors into PRSA activities. Please continue to
check this website for more information.
As well as an organized and safe environment, PRSA has a fleet of safety
boats and equipment for racing. In the Opti fleet, your kids will not
only learn how to sail, but will evolve into racers. When they're
ready, the kids will participate in small races in the cove of the
Marina that runs along the GW Parkway. They will learn the racing rules
and how to maneuver their boat around a race course. By the time
they're ready for a bigger boat to sail for college and high school
racing, they will have attended several lessons and actual races,
preparing them for a solid future in the sport. Our goal is to see
these kids grow and race in PRSA's fleets.
We have coaches for racing and instructors for basic sailing, but we
expect the parents to be involved with their child's swimming education
and the life-long boating safety education. We will require parents to
sign an acknowledgement of their understanding of PRSA's liability
agreement and risk waivers, so please make sure your emergency insurance
coverage is up to date and your kids have USCGA certified lifejackets.
We will teach the kids how to sail in all kinds of conditions and what
their responsibilities are for being safe on the water, but we will NOT
teach your kids how to swim. As an ex-swim instructor, you can begin
teaching babies how to become comfortable in and around water, so I
suggest parents get started on that right away.
In the meantime, please feel free to email the group for discussions,
ideas, and updates.
